Foxton Granta win thrilling 2024 Voneus Village Cup final at Lord’s
Foxton Granta triumphs in historic Voneus Village Cup final at Lord’s, shattering records with century-double victory
16th September 2024It was back in October last year that the call went out for entries to the 2024 Voneus Village Cup.
The road to Lord’s began with 356 village clubs in 32 divisions and culminated on Sunday with Foxton Granta CC crowned champions following a thrilling final against Dumbleton CC.
The winning innings included a brilliant century from Richard Kaufman who smashed 110 off 84 balls while Adam Webster made an unbeaten 97 off 110 balls, both of which helped Foxton chase down Dumbleton’s 240.
Kaufman’s ton marked the first time two centuries have been scored in a Village Cup Final after Dumbleton’s Charlie Garratt made 119 in the first innings, which looked enough for victory before a partnership of 206 between Kaufman and Webster – another record for the final – secured victory for Foxton.
Sunday’s match was a 2nd final appearance for both clubs: Dumbleton won the trophy in 2022, and Foxton CC were 2015 finalists.
Voneus was delighted when former England international Lydia Greenway agreed to continue her role as ambassador. Lydia goes above and beyond when it comes to cricket and valuing the importance of grassroots cricket, making her the perfect champion for the Village Cup.
As such, the year kicked off with Lydia hosting a junior masterclass at Cropredy Cricket Club where she answered questions, led games of changing room cricket and posed for pictures with everyone. Cropredy Cricket Club were incredible hosts and put on a brilliant day despite the wet weather. To reciprocate, Voneus was delighted to invite chairman of the club Peter Cooling to ring the 5 minute bell at Lord’s before the start of the first innings.
Thanks go to all the clubs who took part in this year’s Voneus Village Cup Community Legends competition. It was inspiring to hear the heart-warming stories from across the UK about how club members go above and beyond to not only support their players but their communities as a whole.
Shoutout to Grampoud Road CC who are this year’s Community Legends – a fine example of how grassroots sport continues to thrive in the right hands. Grampound wowed the judges by demonstrating their current values as well as their commitment to the future, inclusion and sustainability. It was wonderful to have the Chairman Lewis Sanders and Vice Chairman Chris Willet at the final to collect their award.
A massive thank you from Voneus to all the clubs who took part in this year’s tournament, along with their back room staff, coaches, friends and family – you’ve made it a year to remember. We look forward to welcoming you back to the Voneus Village Cup 2025.
