Copper Switch Off
2nd May 2024
Voneus is bringing ultrafast broadband to communities across the UK, connecting homes and businesses in even the hardest to reach areas.
Our full fibre network will keep you connected in a digital world, with broadband that works hard for you today and futureproofs your hone for tomorrow.
End of the line for your old landline
The technology behind the UK’s telephone system is more than 100 years old and in the process of being upgraded.
Outdated copper cables that have delivered not only telephone calls but also internet services are to be retired by Openreach in what is being called the ‘Copper Switch Off’.
Analogue phone networks will be replaced with a digital phone system that works via the internet called VoIP – Voice over Internet Protocol. And systems that rely on the same networks, like fire and burglar alarms, CCTV and door-entry systems, will also need to find a new way of operating.
VoIP is exactly what it says – clever technology converts your voice into a digital signal that is then shared between devices over the internet. It’s a similar technology to that fused by other voice and video services such as WhatsApp, FaceTime and Skype.

The switch off, which has already begun in some parts of the UK, is due to complete in January 2027 and will affect everyone with a landline.
What is the Copper Switch Off?
Openreach is switching off its old copper based network and replacing it with a faster, more reliable fibre optic cable network.
What does it mean for me?
When the network is switched off, you won’t be able to use a traditional landline, and will need to switch to a reliable internet based phone.
What do I need to do?
You can move to a VoIP service straight - either by upgrading your phone and broadband package to full fibre, or if you already have full fibre it might be as simple as plugging in a compatible digital phone to your router.
The good news is, Voneus VoIP is easy to set up, offers unlimited UK calls and you’ll find the sound quality crystal clear. Extra features mean you’ll have instant access to 3-way calling, a virtual second line, simultaneous ring and call forwarding to your mobile - and in most cases, you’ll even get to keep your existing landline number.
